The ALA Annual 2014 ACRL President’s Program Committee is currently working to develop a session on Financial Literacy for the conference in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Given the recent recession and general economic realities, the need for students and citizens to better understand and manage their finances has never been greater, and we see an emerging role for academic libraries in facilitating the development of competencies in this area.

As a result, we are trying to identify academic libraries that are currently planning or engaged in programming on issues related to student loan debt or personal finance. We know that academic libraries across the country are increasingly participating in campus efforts to improve students’ overall lifelong learning skills including financial literacy.

If your library hosts or collaborates with other campus departments on financial literacy workshops, speakers, resource pages designed to develop student or staff skills in these areas, or if you work with community organizations (banks, credit unions, or other financial concerns) to help raise awareness of how to manage personal finances, we would like to hear from you. We hope to feature your work at the program and in events leading up to the 2014 conference.

Need an example? Check out the Financial Literacy For College Students online guide created by Lauren Reiter, Business Liaison Librarian at Penn State - http://www.libraries.psu.edu/psul/researchguides/business/financialliteracy.html#moneycounts This project has also included adding new personal finance titles to the collection and hosting financial literacy events such as “10 Things College Student Should Know about Money” and “Budgeting 101.”
