Dear Board members,

Attached are the draft minutes from the Board's pre-MW Conference Call on January 9, 2013. Please review and use the comments section to note any suggested revisions by Thursday, January 17th. I will then revise accordingly and have on the consent agenda at MW.

Thanks!

Mary Ellen

Hi Mary Ellen,

Under 5.0, it was my understanding that:

Board will need to choose one OR MORE of the recommendations.

I, of course, added the OR MORE.

Thanks,

Mark

Thanks, Mark. Great catch. I made the change on the attached draft. Lis has also been in touch with a clarification of the section funding change described in the first paragraph under 6.0. The new language is below and is incorprated in the new draft attached.

ACRL has had a funding model in place on pilot basis since 2011 that provides each section with a base of $1000 plus an additional $0 .75 for each member over 200.  ACRL staff provided an analysis of how funds were used in FY11 and FY12.  As noted on action form, the new model has resulted in increased expenditures (now up to 60%).   Chabot noted that the working group reviewed the expenditures for FY11 and FY12 and is recommending a revised funding model that retains the base of $1000 and provides an additional $0.75 for each member over 400. Although this model does result in lower allocation (if approved for FY14), it does save some money and is more in line with actual section expenditures.

Please note here or let me know of any additional changes by Thursday, January 17th. Thanks!

Hi Mary Ellen,

Under adjournment there is a sentence that reads: "Staff will bring print copies Herold if documents are added after January 18th. "

I am thinking that "Herold" is an extra unintended word in the sentence.

Thanks, Julie. New version attached making that sentence more clear.

I edited the section about the Core Values TF that are noted below.  But I also typed them out in the attached Word doc so someone can cut/paste if that is easier.  I mostly inserted "ethics" with "intellectual freedom" since we are primarily focusing on the two committees that were proposed to be disbanded.  Hope this helps and appreciate Mary Ellen and/or Mary Jane taking notes.

Farrell thanked Janice Welburn and Martin Garner for their work.

Farrell thanked the task force members for their work and noted the significant contributions of the chair Janie Welburn and member Martin Garner.

Board will need to choose one of the recommendations.

Board will need to choose one or more of the recommendations. (Thanks Mark for the catch on this.)

Underlying all recommendations is a strong commitment to intellectual freedom.

The Task Force believes that ACRL should be well represented in information freedom discussions at ALA level.

The Task Force believes that academic issues should be well represented in ethics and information freedom discussions at the ALA level.

  • Could more background information on why the committees were disbanded be included in the documents since new board members may not have all the background?

Could more background information on why the committees were proposed to be disbanded be included in the documents since new board members may not have all the background?

The review created impression that Board was not supportive of intellectual freedom.

The Board could require that the representatives be more accountable.

The Board could require that the representatives be more accountable to the Board; not just to their respective ACRL committee.

Thanks, Maggie for your careful reading of that section. Your changes were made in the minutes and the latest version is attached. This version will also be in the Jan. 18th Board compilation.
