Drive up book drops question

PLA members, this library is looking for book drop guidelines. Please provide any links or tips you have in Comments.

Question to PLA members, “We are in the process of investigating the safety and security of our parking lot book drops. We have concerns about their placement and are wondering if there are actual guidelines for public libraries on parking lot safety in respect to book drops. For example, how much radius is needed from the drops to parking spaces, width of access routes, etc.? Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated.”

Response from PLA office- PLA tends to provide tools for planning rather than guidelines. We have a book about facilities, but I don’t think that it gets into measurements in the parking lot. There are measurements for "public use furniture and equipment". Book link to buy: http://www.alastore.ala.org/detail.aspx?ID=2247 Title if you want to interlibrary loan it: Managing Facilities for Results: Optimizing Space for Services by Cheryl Bryan. Companion site for the book: http://www.elearnlibraries.com/workforms/managing_facilities_for_results.html.

We recommend posting your question to Publib too: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PUBLIB and http://bestofpublib.wordpress.com/2012/01/15/subscribe-to-the-publib-lis...

Google “fast food drive through specs” and “fast food drive through planning” because those facilities need room too. A bunch of municipal guidelines popped up. Perhaps you can find some that would be helpful to your project?
