ALA Annual 2012 Committee and Interest Group Chair Coordinator Report

INTRODUCTION
Here is a list of the activities that the Committee and Interest Group Chair Coordinator will oversee leading up to the ALA Midwinter Meeting.

LITA CHAIR ORIENTATION
Hopefully in August, once the majority of the new chairs have been appointed, we will offer an online synchronous orientation session for LITA Chairs. Here are the topics we have identified for inclusion in the orientation session.

  • Programming and Publications
  • Overview / update on the strategic plan
  • General Duties of Chairs
  • Where to find important documents / who to contact
  • Budget overview and how it relates to the Committees and Interest Groups
  • Working with your board liaison
  • Legal Framework Overview
  • Best Practices for Using Connect to Connect LITA Business
  • Really important deadlines

HOW TO CONDUCT A DISCUSSION GROUP
ALA has announced changes that will affect programming at ALA 2013 and beyond. While there will be fewer programs at the conference, discussion groups are not counted as programs so even if an IG or Committee does not get a program accepted they can still host a discussion group. During a conversation during the Committee and Interest Group Chair Meeting at the Annual Conference, many felt that some of the discussion group sessions were really programs. Based on the conversation it was decided that a guide on how to conduct discussion groups should be created. The Coordinators will coordinate the creation of this document.

HOW TO ENGAGE COMMITTEE/INTEREST GROUP CHAIRS VIRTUALLY
One complaint many chairs have had over time is how to engage their committee and interest group members so we can continue to do the work of our groups between conferences. It was decided to start a discussion on ALA Connect where chairs could share their ideas on how to engage their members between conferences.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
There has been discussion for a while now of offering some type of training for LITA Chairs that would help them with their leadership role within LITA, ALA and your organization.  The first session will be held at the 2013 Midwinter meeting. The Joint Committee and IG Chairs meeting will take place on Saturday morning from 8-8:30 am. The leadership development training will take place from 8:30-10. Topic still to be determined.

I'm really excited about getting this kind of training!  I notice that there's not much August left; is there an update on when the chair orientation will be?
