Summary of Current Activities

The RSS Library Services to an Aging Population Committee sponsored a program at the ALA Annual Conference in Anaheim: “How Libraries Are Meeting the Evolving Needs of Baby Boomers and Older Adults.”  Over 100 people attended the program, which included presentations by:  Susan Hildreth (IMLS), Jane Salisbury (Multnomah County Public Library), Tony Sarmiento (Senior Services America), and Suzanne Flint (California State Library).  The program included a lively question and answer period, in which various viewpoints on serving these populations were expressed.  If you would like slideshows from the program, you can view them online at: http://connect.ala.org/node/185179.

We are working on new wording for our committee charge, since the current wording does not reflect current changes in the way we approach the aging process, or the impact of increasing lifespan on the population of adults over 50.

The committee is finalizing the date for a virtual meeting (later in August) to discuss our goals and plan our committee work for the next year.  This will be the first meeting we hold using Blackboard Collaborate.
