Program Planning Committee Report 2012 Annual
The Program Planning Committee is proud to present 2 exciting programs for Anaheim 2012!
Fabulous Havens: Libraries as Safe Spaces for the Needs of LGBT Youth
Saturday, June 23 OR Sunday, June 24
Both: 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm
This interactive workshop, presented by GLSEN, will focus on the ways that libraries can create safe, respectful and healthful environments for all youth, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression. Librarians will explore relevant school climate data, assess their own knowledge of LGBT history and themes, discuss ways to increase resource diversity and learn about research-based solutions to increasing academic performance and psychological well-being for LGBT students.
Led by Jenny Betz, Education Manager, GLSEN
Coming Out in Print: The LGBT Literary Landscape Today
Monday June 25
4:00 pm - 5:30 pm
Join us for a lively discussion about the LGBT literary scene, the notable books in our community, and the institutions that help LGBT writers, readers, publishers and librarians. Panel participants include Tony Valenzuela (Executive Director of LLF), Monica Carter (Program Coordinator, LGBT Writers in Schools Program, LLF), Wayne Hoffman (author of Sweet Like Sugar), Jane Cothron & Christie Gibrich (GLBTRT Rainbow Book List), and Martin Garnar (Over the Rainbow Book List).
We are very excited for both!
As for 2013, there have been some updates since Midwinter.
We are still looking at doing a program with Out and Equal on work place equality for librarians.
We are now looking at developing a 2nd program on outreach to LGBT homeless youth, drawing on support services in the area. We’ve got a great contact who is researching in this field which should make for an excellent program.
And of course, it's always great to have a bank of ideas, so suggestions for contacts and future program ideas are always welcome!
