ALA Has Purchased Magic Screen Magnifier!‏

See attached email thred

Simon,

I hope that this news will be encouraging for you  and other low vision cconference attendees. If you could send this news out to the Assembly list that would be great. I thought I had Adam Sepaniak (sic) 's Email but apparently not here at home. I'm fine if you wish to include the Email trail below too. Thanks.

Hi Mike,

Sorry for my delay in getting back to you.      I was working on the requests below.    We have upgraded to version 13 in JAWS for the Internet Cafes and the Staff Office.  I also just purchased the MAGIC software from Freedom Scientific.  I am adding it to the Staff Office computer and the Lobby Internet Café.    I hope these items will be helpful to you.

Thank you for bringing them to our attention so we can stay current on accessible technology.

Carrie

Hi Carrie,

Unfortunately there is not much else ALA can do regarding Council meeting accommodations beyond Lois sending me electronic documents as far in advance as possible, which is great, and ALA president Molly Rafael reading out loud word-smithed clauses from resolutions being debated on the floor or other on screen documents which were not available electronically, which she did in Dallas and was very helpful. Of course having strong WiFi available in Council chambers is very important too so that I can quickly download those last minute documents from Lois, and I trust that will continue to be available.

ALA has continued to installed Jaws for Windows screen reader software in both the ALA office and Internet cafe  during conferences (extremely helpful).  I would be grateful if Jaws could be updated to the most current version (13).

One additional potentially helpful accommodation that I mentioned to Lois and Joanne Kempf  is purchasing and installing Open Book v.9 OCR scanning software on the computer in the ALA office along with a compatible scanner. However, I'm not sure I need to scan printed material too often so I'm not sure the expense is justified. I will hold off on that request and determine in Anaheim if it could be helpful for future conferences.

While I have your attention I'd like to request, as has been done by the Accessibility Assembly several times in the past few years, that Conference Services purchase and install Magic 8.0 or latest version screen magnifier software on the Internet Cafe Assistive Technology computer as well as the AT computer in the ALA Office. Right now only the Windows basic default  screen magnification software is available and several low vision ALA attendees have remarked to me on its inadequacy as an accommodation. Magic screen magnification software is also made by the same company that makes Jaws for Windows (Freedom Scientific) so it could presumably be purchased as a bundle by ALA. Again, this request is not for me personally as a Council member but by me as a Council representative and advocate for ASCLA and   the Accessibility Assembly.

Being a blind Council member is still a learning experience so I will continue to gather data and let you all know what further technology or adaptive equipment could be helpful. Thank you very much for being proactive in this effort. I greatly appreciate it.

Sincerely,

Mike Marlin

Hi Mr. Marlin,

I am writing you to see if we need to order an devices for the Council Meetings for the ALA Annual Conference.  I know it was not as planned in Dallas for Midwinter so I want to make sure we order everything you may need.

Can you tell me exactly what would work best for you?

Thank you for your time.

Carrie
