Proposed purpose statement for the RSS Young Adult Reference Services Committee

Hello members of RSS O&P,

We have now approved 3 of the 4 purpose statements for our new committees! The only purpose statement remaining for us to approve is for first committee that we created at the beginning of the year: The Young Adult Reference Services Committee.

The process for developing the relationship with YALSA continues.  So that the committee can begin work during the 2012-2013 year, the following purpose statement has been adjusted to reflect that the YALSA partnership is a work in progress.  All other recommendations by RSS O&P and Exec. have been incorporated. Though purpose statements don't normally specify the guidelines for which a committee is responsible, I've left this part in simply to make sure that this responsibility is not forgotten as the committee beings its work.  The committee can recommend removing mention of this later.  Sarah is ready to make member appointments. Once O&P approves, this will go to RSS Exec.

Young Adult Reference Services Committee - Purpose:

To provide forums for discussion, sharing, and learning relating to the provision of reference, information, and homework help services to young adults.  Generally the focus user group is age 12 to 19 years. This committee takes responsibility for maintaining the Guidelines for Library Services to Teens developed by a joint RUSA/YALSA task force in 2008: http://yalsa.ala.org/guidelines/referenceguidelines.pdf / http://www.ala.org/rusa/resources/guidelines/guidelinesteens.

The poll will follow in a separate ALA Connect post.
