Library Services to an Aging Population Committee - Summary of Current Activities

Library Services to an Aging Population Committee - Summary of Current Activities

At our virtual meeting on January 18th the committee discussed trends in library service to our target population, in preparation for our discussion forum at Midwinter.  We also agreed that we need to review our committee Charge.  The text is a bit outdated and we would like to create a draft of some new text that we can propose to RSS.

At the ALA Midwinter Meeting in Dallas, the Library Services to an Aging Population hosted a free-flowing discussion about programs and services to Baby Boomers. Topics raging from ebooks, computer classes, financial literacy, urban farming, veterans issues, history, and employment programs were examined in the context of the needs and wants of the Baby Boom generation.

The committee is also sponsoring a program at the ALA Annual Conference in Anaheim: How Libraries Are Meeting the Evolving Needs of Baby Boomers and Older Adults.  Panelist will include: Susan Hildreth (IMLS), Jane Salisbury (Multnomah County Public Library), Tony Sarmiento (Senior Services America), and Suzanne Flint (California State Library).

Jeff Kempe, chair 2011-2013

FYI: the discussion at Midwinter was also profiled in Cognotes: http://www.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/hall-erickson/alacognotes_dallas_highlights201201/index.php?device=accessible&pg=16
