Welcome and Some Financial Resources You Will Find Useful
Hi, everyone! I look forward to seeing all of you in a little over a week. You have already seen a number of the documents on the Budget that Susan has been uploading into Connect. Please review them and bring copies to the meeting.
One of the most difficult learning curves in serving on this committee is the work that is tied to learning about ALA financial issues.
BARC has developed a new program of webinars to introduce division leaders to ALA finances. Please take a bit of time before our meeting to view the first two of these. They have been posted to the ALA Treasurers’ web site. There are two more promised before Midwinter and I will let you know when they are available. Each webinar is about 10-12 minutes long and even for me (who did not inherit an accounting gene), they are interesting.
These are Windows Media files. Please note that the www.ala.org links below take you to a page of specifications and solutions for errors. The alcts links take you directly to the webinars.
ALA Organizational Structure & Decision Making Process:
ALA Operating Agreement
The two additional titles still coming are:
- Budget Process/Cycle
- Long-Term Investment Fund
These are supposed to be completed and posted by the end of this week. A fifth module is planned, but I do not yet know the subject.
At the bottom of the ala.org pages, you will also find a link to a new ALA Connect Community called the Budget and Finance Group. Anyone may join. This will be a good place to ask questions about the webinars and to provide feedback about them. The ALA Budget Analysis and Review Committee (BARC) will also distribute additional information via this group.
Finally, the ALA Treasurer’s web site (http://www.ala.org/aboutala/governance/financialdata/treasurerspage) has some useful information that may be of value to you. I particularly recommend the Member Financial Primer at http://www.ala.org/aboutala/files/governance/financialdata/Member%20Financial%20PrimerMaster12.ppt It is primarily for BARC members, but has nice definitions that may be of help as well as an overview of the timeline for the budget process.
See you soon!
