Looking forward to Midwinter

The Committee on Organization has two meetings scheduled during the 2012 Midwinter Meeting in Dallas:

Saturday, January 21, 1:00-3:00, Dallas Convention Center, room A127

Sunday, January 22, 1:00-3:00, Dallas Convention Center, room D255

The agenda will be distributed soon.  So far it is light; so it is not certauin that we will need the Sunday afternoon meeting.

The most recent communication sent to COO is a proposal from AASL regarding the composition of the ALA Committee on Education; see attched.

On Thursday, January 5, 2012, Lorelle Swader sent the following information (including the two attachments):

Happy New Year!

COE actually has a precedence for these actions with “three” additional seats that were taken to COO and later approved by Council:

At the 1999 ALA Annual Conference, the ALA Council approved the designation of two liaisons to the Committee on Education, one each from ALISE and CLENERT.  They were to be non-voting participants in the work of the committee.

At the 2004 Midwinter Meeting, the ALA Council voted to add a non-voting liaison to the Committee on Education, and that liaison is to be drawn from the membership of the ACRL Community and Junior College Libraries Section’s Library Technical Assistant Education Committee, and to be appointed by ACRL.

In all three of these examples, the units annually notify COE through the staff liaison who has been appointed by their group

These groups approached COO for these seats for much of the same rationale that AASL is asking.  The additional reason is that each of these organizations not only wanted people to represent the “subject” interest of that group, but also to be an official communication channel with COE for that group.  As an example, in the case of school library educators, there have been many individuals appointed to COE over the years who represent the issues, but they have not always been active members of AASL to represent the ESLS group.

For your information, I have attached copies of letters that are part of my archives from both CLENERT (now LEARNRT) and ALISE when they sought  appointments.  I don’t know that I will be able to make the COO meeting for the discussion, but please feel free to contact me if I can provide you with additional institutional memory of COE.
