The mission of the Library Instruction Round Table (LIRT) is to provide a forum for discussion of activities, programs, and problems of instruction in the use of libraries; to contribute to the education and training of librarians for library instruction; to promote instruction in the use of libraries as an essential library service, and to serve as a channel of communication on library instruction between the ALA divisions, ALA and ACRL committees, state clearinghouses, Project LOEX, other organizations concerned with instruction in the use of libraries, and members of the Association.

    CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS

    The deadline for submissions is January 15, 2012.                       

    The Program Planning Committee of the Library Instruction Roundtable (LIRT) of ALA invites proposals for presentation at the LIRT Conference Program, “Critical Thinking & Library Instruction: Fantasyland or Adventureland?” during the 2012 American Library Association Annual Conference in Anaheim, CA.

    LIRT provides a forum for inclusive conversation and professional development in library instruction and information literacy, key components of lifelong learning.  Critical thinking competencies are essential to this process.  As librarians move beyond "how to" instruction sessions, understanding and incorporating educational principles and practices, such as critical thinking, will help leverage their collaborations with user communities. 

    Instruction librarians and professionals engaged in educating users from all types of libraries and other interested individuals are encouraged to submit a proposal.

    Successful proposals will:

    • Include at least one learning objective
    • Effectively engage the audience for a 15-minute presentation
    • Offer practical applications/examples of incorporating critical thinking (CT) in library instruction
    • Suggested topic areas: collaboration with faculty on CT, teaching methods for CT, CT in the “one-shot session,” collaborating on CT in general education courses

    The Committee will use a peer review process to select four proposals for 15-minute presentations. A brief program introduction will provide a context for the four presentations, which will be followed by questions and discussion. Successful proposals will be presented in person at the LIRT Annual Conference Program in Anaheim, CA, to be held on Sunday, June 24, 2012, 10:30-12:00. Program location to be announced.

    Proposals are due by January 15, 2012. Please include the following information on 2 pages only:

    1. A cover sheet with your name(s), title(s), institutional affiliation(s), mailing address(es), fax number(s) and email address(es).

    2. A second page without any personal identifying information. This page must include: the presentation title, a brief abstract (250 words), learning objective(s), and a paragraph describing how you will deliver the presentation (e.g., PowerPoint, learning activity, etc.).
