Join us for discussion and networking among new librarians, new members of LLAMA and/or NMRT, librarians making career shifts, experienced leaders, and anyone interested in developing leadership skills. Our Midwinter discussion will look at how professional organization leadership can enhance one's full time job.

Hi Linda,

It looks like several us like the idea of how professional org involvement can enhance one's full time job as the topic. If we're all okay with it, then I like the 3rd description: "How can professional organization leadership enhance your full time job? Join us for discussion and networking among new librarians, new members of LLAMA and/or NMRT, librarians making career shifts, experienced leaders, and anyone interested in developing leadership skills." I like that it begins with a specific topic to attract interested people.

I agree with Leo about the third description.

That's the one I like, too, Leo.

I'm starting to plan my President's Program for Annual, and I think the topic is going to be about networking. If we wanted to, there's definitely the potential for tying the two programs together somehow.

I am a little unsure about "professional organization leadership" in the program description.   Maybe it is not just "leadership," at least in the beginning, that benefits the primary job.  When I joined LLAMA I was looking for networking and mentoring, not expecting to end up in leadership.   I wonder if this description of the topic might put off some people who aren't leaders in the professional organizations yet.  I actually thought this topic was more about how professional organzation involvement was beneficial and, of course, becoming a leader in the association has benefits at another level with one's job.  But there is a lot to be said for just basic involvement and the contacts, informal mentoring, and good ideas one gets with that involvement.   Am I mincing words too much or does this make sense to anyone else?

Thanks,

Gail

How about "professional organization involvement"? It does cast a wider net to attract more people. Some of the discussions could be about pro. org. leadership, and some could be for people who are just starting out.

However, if we take the word, leadership, out of the 1st sentence, I would change the next sentence a bit and put "LLAMA and NMRT leaders" as the 1st group of people, just to assure attendees that there will be people who have the knowledge to talk about how their pro. org. leadership experience has impacted their full time job.

So, how about: "How can professional organization involvement enhance your full time job? Join us for discussion and networking among LLAMA and NMRT leaders, new librarians, new members of LLAMA and/or NMRT, librarians making career shifts, and anyone interested in developing leadership skills" ?

It would be great to tie the NLDG and the NMRT President's program together in some way at Annual!

Okay, two more things:

How about "regular" or "day-to-day" job instead of "full-time" job?

How about "Join us for discussion and networking" "with" instead of "among"

I like Leo's suggested change and Linda's tweaks to that.

Sounds good to me.

I shall submit this as described:

"How can professional organization involvement enhance your day-to-day job? Join us for discussion and networking with LLAMA and NMRT members, new librarians, new members of LLAMA and/or NMRT, librarians making career shifts, and anyone interested in developing leadership skills."

I think it should be "LLAMA and NMRT leaders" instead of members.

Thanks!

I had forgotten that Annual events needed to be submitted this week, too. Do we want to decide on a topic today or tomorrow, or submit a more generic description?
