After reviewing the GLBTRT Resources webpage and their website analytics
data, we propose that the Round Table continue to host GLBT-related
bibliographies and resource lists that have been created or approved by
GLBTRT members and that there should be a standing committee charged with
creating, approving, and maintaining group-curated resources.  Bibliographies
created by individuals will no longer be hosted on the GLBTRT webpage.  The
new committee will approve the content and establish criteria for maintaining
links, monitoring usage, and website changes.  We also recommend that the
committee start its work by identifying topics for new resources, evaluating
the current resources for possible revision or deletion, and setting up a
mechanism on the page for users to suggest new topics or other changes on the
page.

Approved by the GLBTRT Resources Ad Hoc Committee, 17 January 2013, and
submitted by Walt Cat Walker on their behalf.

I realize that our group has been unable to complete all of the charge that
we were given in Spring 2012.  Several of the Ad Hoc Committee members are
willing to be serve on a standing committee if one is formed, and I am
willing to chair it, if the Board wishes to accept our proposal.  I expect to
have more time to lead a committee after my term as Chair of OLAC's
Cataloging Policy Committee ends this June.

We have assembled the full complement of the committee from a variety of library backgrounds, which will greatly assist in evaluating the lists we have now, and suggesting useful courses of action, and that we will be making extensive use of the email forum as a venue for discussions.Members of GLBTRT Resource Ad hoc Committee

Reporting Schedule

(from committee proposal)  The committee will issue progress reports to GLBTRT Membership and leadership on a quarterly basis and a final report a week before 2013 ALA Midwinter Meeting.

Committee Background

At the ALA 2012 Midwinter Meeting, the GLBT Round Table Steering Committee charged this ad hoc committee one year to assess, develop, and maintain all resources listed on Publications page of the round table web site.  The content on this page was on the Popular Resources page of our old web site.

Ad hoc Committee Charge

At the ALA 2012 Midwinter Meeting, the GLBT Round Table Steering Committee charged this ad hoc committee one year to assess, develop, and maintain all resources listed on Publications page of the round table website.  (The contents of this page were on the old website -- on the Popular Resources page.)

[The committee roster is to the right under "Members."  Full contact information is located here.]

  • Assess existing resources / add to the list:
    • assess existing GLBTRT Popular Resources pages for update or deletion
      • (Note that the Religion and Spirituality bibliography is the only resource on this page being maintained)
    • use the member-generated GLBTRT Toolkit Development List for topic ideas
    • assess resource lists outside the GLBTRT to avoid duplication -- link to them when appropriate (HRC, etc)
    • continually consult membership on the email list for suggestions and ideas
  • Document a development and maintenance plan that includes:
    • leveraging the collective wisdom of membership on the email list for topics and specific resource suggestions
    • assessing resources outside the GLBTRT to avoid duplication and link to them
    • assessing existing resources with membership input and consideration of outside GLBTRT resources

Possible Outcomes

This is not part of the committee charge, just a list of possible outcomes.

A committee charged with creating and maintaining resources could:

  • decide that our organization will not try to maintain such lists and resources
  • be the administrative body to coordinate resource development and maintenance of all resources not associated with our awards, book lists, and reviews;
  • collaborate with other organizations with oversight from the External Relations Committee;
  • create another pathway to engage with LGBT organizations;
  • respond quickly to create resources on current events such as the Ugandan Kill the Gays Bill or link to existing resources;
  • engage membership on the email list with polls and use suggestions in threads to begin new resources (i.e., the recent email thread, “Seeking Recommendations for Family Friendly GLBT films” is creating a resource, it only needs to be published on our site);
  • leverage the power of ALA’s domain as it has a great deal of search engine juice/power which assures our resources will get use by anyone;
  • offer round table members another committee service opportunity; and
  • provide another set of resources for the round table to share with the world.

Reporting Expectations

  • The committee will issue progress reports to GLBTRT Membership and leadership on a quarterly basis with a final report a week before 2013 ALA Midwinter Meeting.
