Library Services to the Spanish Speaking - Goals 2011-2012

Tags: Goals

Hi all,

The following are some proposed goals for 2011-2012.

  1. Analyze the Survey on Library Services to Spanish Speakers, recently implemented by the committee, and identify specific needs and challenges of servicing Spanish-speakers.
  2. Organize a discussion forum at the 2012 ALA Annual Conference in Anaheim based on the survey results.

  • The committee held a virtual meeting on August 16, 2011 during which members volunteered to work on different aspects of the two goals stated above.
  • Committee members also agreed to seek out opportunities to share survey results as widely as possible. As a result, two committee members, Gabriel Duque and Julie Robinson have submitted a poster presentation proposal to the 2012 Joint Conference for Librarians of Color to be held in Kansas City in September of 2012.

4/18/12 Update: The poster presentation proposal was accepted. Gabriel and Julie will be working on designing the poster and handouts. Julie will present the poster. Gabriel will co-present if travel is approved.

  • Additionally, three committee members, Julie Robinson, Stephen Marvin and Marjorie Lear are in the process of writing and submitting an article about the survey results to be published in the REFORMA national newsletter.

4/18/12 Update: The article was published online in the Fall/Winter 2011 issue of the REFORMA national newsletter.

  • The committee will conduct a virtual meeting in January of 2012 to continue organizing a possible discussion forum at the 2012 ALA Annual Conference in Anaheim.

4/18/12 Update: The virtual meeting was held and plans are ongoing regarding a discussion forum at ALA Annual.
