PLG Meeting with Guest Speaker Amy Sonnie

Saturday, June 25, 2011
4:00 pm to 5:30 pm, US/Central

Please make plans to attend the Progressive Librarians Guild meeting at ALA Annual in New Orleans.

DATE/TIME: Saturday, June 25, 4:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.

PLACE: Terrebonne Room, Loews New Orleans Hotel, 300 Poydras Street

Our guest speaker will be Amy Sonnie, activist, educator and librarian who has worked with U.S. grassroots social justice movements for the past 17 years. Amy will discuss her acclaimed YA anthology Revolutionary Voices (listed by ALA's Office of Intellectual Freedom as one of 2010's Most Frequently Challenged Books), and her forthcoming Hillbilly Nationalists, Urban Race Rebels, and Black Power: Community Organizing in Radical Times, a history of poor and working-class whites, inspired by the Civil Rights Movement and the Black Panther Party, who organized significant political movements against racism and inequality during the 1960s. The discussion will touch on lessons from this history for librarians and progressive scholars today.
