It's All About Them: Developing Information Services with User Experience Design

Sunday, June 26, 10:30am – noon, Morial Convention Center room 269

Applying User Experience (UX) Design to your library’s public services involves understanding your patrons’ needs and preferences.  In this session, expert panelists John Blyberg (Darien Library), Cody Hansen (University of Minnesota) and Jenny Benevento (Sears Holding Corporation) will define UX design and explain why it’s important, discuss how it can help improve patrons’ overall experience of library resources and services, and describe how it can be implemented in library and information service settings. With practical tips and examples, you’ll be well-equipped to consider UX issues in your own library.

We’ll also be announcing the winner of this year’s My Favorite Martian Award.

Panelists:

Jenny Benevento received her library degree from the University of Illinois.  She has worked professionally & pre-professionally in public, academic, & corporate libraries in reference, instruction, cataloging, serials, archives, collection development, and circulation.  She built the subject heading taxonomy at the Associated Press from scratch and currently works as a full-time taxonomist for Sears/Kmart.

John Blyberg (B.A. English, University of Maine, 1998) is the Assistant Director for Innovation and User Experience at the Darien Library in Connecticut. In December, 2008, John formed the User Experience department to completely redefine how customer service and interaction is handled and delivered to staff and users. John was named a Library Journal “Mover and Shaker,” took first prize in Talis' 2006 “Mashing-up the Library” competition. In 2009 he received the LITA/ Brett Butler Entrepreneurship Award for his work on the SOPAC Application Suite. He speaks nationally and internationally about libraries, user experience, innovation, and technology. He has written for Library Journal, American Libraries, and several other trade journals and has contributed chapters to several published books. He also blogs at blyberg.net.

Cody Hanson is Web Architect and User Experience Analyst at the University of Minnesota Libraries, where he works to make the online research process more intuitive and fruitful for students, staff and faculty. He was a 2010 ALA Emerging Leader, chairs the LITA Education Committee, and recently authored an issue of Library Technology Reports on mobile.
