Diversity Committtee Updates
The purpose of this discussion is to share with committee members and interested colleagues the updates of the Diversity Commitee.
Recently, we piloted an informal (non-voting) chat session in an effort to determine the viability of using chatrooms (no voice/no video) for discussing the work of the committee during the time between the 2 face-to-face meetings. Because we are sponsoring a seminar at the upcoming Preconference in Baton Rouge, we thought it was good time to reconnect and update about our plans for this summer's meetings. As well, we volleyed around ideas for future program planning and chatted about opportunities for outreach.
Three interesting discussion points were:
1. Let's make concerted efforts to outreach more to Scholarship recipients at the Preconference. We hope to engage these attendees when the opportunity arises. Hopefully, we can grab a few for coffee break chats before/after plenary sessions.
2. We discussed the membership of our committee as being "outward" in approach. We are not an insular group and we encourage our members to actively participate (either formally or infomally) in the projects designed by other committees. The whole group agreed this is a noble goal and is committed to its success.
3. The group also discussed the ever growing concern of enabling access to non-English collections. From cataloging to collection development, we all agree this is something to tackle and deliberate upon. We, therefore, thought it would be great to introduce the idea during the meeting at Annual-ALA as a viable discussion group topic at the 2012 Preconference in San Diego.
Overall the chat was a productive outlet for bouncing ideas and discussing important issues. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me (email@example.com) and I'll be happy to answer them.
Thanks for your interest,
