ACRL STS Government Information Committee Meeting Minutes - 2010 ALA Annual
STS Government Information Committee
ALA Annual 2010. Saturday, June 26 10:30-noon, Metro Center Marriott Grand Ballroom A/B
Attending: Patricia Kenly, Andrea Wirth, Alison Ricker (outgoing co-chair), Tim Byrne, Cheryl McCoy (continuing co-chair), guest: Wayne Strickland
Tim agreed to be co-chair with Cheryl for 2010/11
Alison observed that the STS all-committees meeting time usually conflicts with very relevant GODORT and other federal document-related meetings. We agreed to try coordinating attendance at those meetings so that one or two committee members could attend other meetings and report back. Tim and Cheryl will ask members to review Midwinter and Annual meeting schedule in advance, so volunteers can be identified to attend relevant meetings. Legislative Assembly, GODORT, Washington Office updates are of special concern.
2. Review/Assessment of Top Sci-Tech Govt Information Web Sites (ACRL Wiki)
The Assessment Committee will create a survey to determine how and to what extent the list of web sites is being used by STS members, and to judge its effectiveness. Tim attempted to update the listings for state government information. Wayne Strickland (NTIS) noted that GRC no longer exists. Patricia suggested changing Search Engines to Databases. Alison noted that we were not very successful in fulfilling our assignments from Midwinter. We all pledged to do better in the coming months.
Alison will send a PR announcement of the Wiki, highlighting a source on the list that is relevant to a timely issue. Others will follow suit in the coming months:
June – Alison
July, Aug – Tim
Sept, Oct – Andrea
Nov, Dec – Cheryl
Jan, Feb - Patricia
Wayne suggested changing the word order of the listing to Science and Technology Government Information Sources.
3. Review/Assessment of Facebook Group/Page
Tim still intends to migrate the group to a page. Wayne suggested highlighting or profiling scientists on the page. Alison suggested using the Facebook page to highlight government agencies involved in science/technology, especially related to current events (e.g., Gulf oil spill).
4. Advocacy Role for Committee
Alison will highlight FRPAA and legislation proposed that would negate it and the NIH policy, with a message to STS-L.
5. Other business
Wayne indicated that he would welcome official appointment to the committee. Alison will send to him the link for the official ACRL committee volunteer form. Welcome, Wayne! (Manager, Program and Product Management, NTIS). email@example.com
