Scale, projection, and coordinates

MARC 255:

It looks to me as if this is simplified and more logical than it is in AACR2R rules. In the early 1980s, at one point Robert Karrow noted that the field was a mixture of transcribed and non-transcribed information. For example: "Scale" does not always appear on the resource, yet it's always included in |a and is never bracketed; corner coordinates all too often do not appear on the resource, yet they're never bracketed but rather always enclosed in parentheses - so there's no way for a cataloger to signal when the coordinates are not taken from the corners of the resource but rather have been estimated. Inputting "approximately" will take more than time than inputting "ca." but then the percentage of online-catalog users who know the meaning of "ca." is probably quite small.
