Emerging Trends Discussion Group - 2010 Annual Conference

Colleagues,

The LLAMA HRS Emerging Trends Discussion Group will meet in DC on Saturday, June 26, from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m., in the Hilton Washington, DuPont Room.

At Midwinter in Boston, the DG attendees identified a group of current Libraries’ HR trends and, through subsequent communication, have voted on the top 3 for concurrent discussions at the DC meeting.  These are the topics:

1) How are you coping with changes in library staffing? Examples include: demographics, hybrid positions, scope creep in jobs, the nature of work itself, growing need for technology skills, consolidations, downsizing, and the like.  [Facilitated by Eileen Theodore-Shusta]

2) How are budget cuts affecting your staff and how are you coping with resulting morale concerns? Examples include hiring freezes, pay cuts, furloughs, layoffs, workload issues, and more. [Facilitated by Deb Sunday]

3) How have you incorporated succession management and leadership development into your planning? What strategies have you used to address these needs?  Describe more rigorous and structured approaches to succession planning and leadership development that you have encountered or heard about. Possibilities may include articulating management competencies, creating competency-based job descriptions, assessing and developing your “bench strength”.  [Facilitated by Shelley Phipps]

Please join us for stimulating discussions of these hot topics; we always learn so much from each other.  We’ll also be soliciting volunteers to serve as the next co-chairs of the Discussion Group.  If you’re interested, please feel free to let me know now, in the near future, or at the meeting in DC.

Don’t hesitate to let me know if questions come to mind. I hope you’re enjoying the last weeks of spring, and all the best,

Susan
