Discussion Seeking Nominations for the Marta Lange/SAGE-CQ Press Award

Do you know an academic, government, or law librarian who has made distinguished contributions to the library profession through research, service to the profession, or other creative activity?  Consider nominating him/her for the Marta Lange/SAGE-CQ Press Award!

Nominees should have achieved distinction in one or more of the following areas:

Do you know an academic, government, or law librarian who has made distinguished contributions to the library profession through research, service to the profession, or other creative activity?  Consider nominating him/her for the Marta Lange/SAGE-CQ Press Award!

Nominees should have achieved distinction in one or more of the following areas:

  • Planning and implementation of a model bibliography/information services program in a law, government document, or political science library.
  • History of contributions to the field through research, publications and other activities displaying active participation in the advancement of law/political science librarianship.
  • Service to the profession through ACRL or related regional and national organizations.
  • ​Promotion or development of an education program for law and political science librarianship that has served as a model for other courses and programs.

The award recipient receives $1,000 and a plaque sponsored by SAGE-CQ Press.

Nominations should be submitted with the name and contact information of the nominee as well as a short narrative supporting the nomination. The narrative must speak to the impact of the nominee’s work on librarianship in law/political science through the areas of distinction.

The award committee will also contact the nominee’s supervisor for more detailed information and a CV, which will be considered along with the nominator’s narrative. Individuals may nominate themselves or others.

Charlie Wapner from OITP will join us to discuss 3d printing in public libraries.   Charlie Wapner is currently an Information Policy Analyst for the ALA Washington Office in the Office of Information Technology Policy. 

Wapner is the author and coordinator of several 3d printing publications including :  "Progress in the Making: An Introduction to 3D Printing and Public Policy"  and "Progress in the Making: 3D Printing Policy Considerations Through the Lens of the Library."

 

His biography is below:

 

Charlie Wapner: Information Policy Analyst

 

As OITP’s Information Policy Analyst, Charlie provides analytical, organizational, and logistical support to the ALA Washington Office as part of a team developing and implementing a national information policy agenda for America’s public libraries. He also supports new internal processes to improve ALA’s ability to advance its public policy agenda. Prior to working at ALA, Charlie spent two-and-a-half years providing policy and communications support to members of the U.S. House of Representatives. He worked first for Congressman Mark Critz of Pennsylvania and then for Congressman Ron Barber of Arizona. Charlie holds a B.A. in diplomatic history from the University of Pennsylvania and an M.S. in public policy and management from Carnegie Mellon University.

The NMRT Resume Review Service Committee is recruiting volunteer resume reviewers and booth greeters as well as taking resume review appointments for ALA 2015 Annual.  We are in need of  volunteers to greet participants, and/or review resumes and cover letters.  Librarians from all types of libraries and specializations are invited to volunteer.

The NMRT Resume Review Service booth, located inside the ALA Placement Center, is open Saturday, June 27th, and Sunday, June 28th, from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm.  The service is free of charge to anyone.  Appointment are 30 minutes long and usually fill up quickly.  While we encourage advance appointments, on-site walk-ins are seen as time permits.  More information about volunteering and making an appointment is available at http://bit.ly/1vArIPT .  If you have questions, please contact the NMRT Resume Review Service Committee Chair, Nicole Spoor, at nicolespoor@gmail.com.

Event Labor and African American History Bus Tour at ALA Annual in San Francisco

A special bus tour during ALA will trace San Francisco’s labor and African American history. The tour will explore labor sites as well as sites along San Francisco’s African American Freedom Trail.

SAN FRANCISCO AT ALA ANNUAL

A special bus tour during ALA will trace San Francisco’s labor and African American history. The tour will explore labor sites as well as sites along San Francisco’s African American Freedom Trail.

The roots of labor and African American history run deep in San Francisco. A. Philip Randolph touched off the modern civil rights movement from San Francisco’s Hotel Whitcomb in 1935 when he convinced the AFL-CIO to certify the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters and ban segregation in the labor movement. Other historic labor events and activities include the West Coast Waterfront Strike of 1934, support for the Montgomery bus boycott, the United San Francisco Freedom Movement, anti-apartheid activities, and the church-labor coalition.

San Francisco’s African American Freedom Trail tours the sites where African American pioneers locally changed the world. One of the most dominant features of Fisherman’s Wharf is the public art of Sargent Johnson, whose work adorns the front and back of the main building of the San Francisco National Maritime Historical Park as well as the stadium of George Washington High School. Among those who drew inspiration from his work were Maya Angelou and Johnny Mathis, as they matriculated there. Just up Hyde Street from the Maritime Park is the Russian Hill mansion where Langston Hughes wrote and partied with the Hollywood upper crust in 1934-35. Also near the waterfront is the apartment where Alex Haley wrote the Autobiography of Malcolm X and ROOTS.

The joint labor and African American Freedom Trail tour will be led by Oxford University Press historian and Trail curator John William Templeton. Raise your cultural awareness of our conference host city with the knowledge of where movements were born and the greats drew their inspiration.

Time: 9:30am, tour will last approximately 90 minutes. Depending on demand, more times may be added.

Departs from: the passenger loading zone on the south side of Mission Street midway between 3rd and 4th Street directly behind the Moscone Convention Center.

The RUSA Learning Opportunities Task Force is creating a new plan for continued learning and professional development services to members and is collecting feedback from RUSA members and the wider library community. The results of this feedback will help inform the Task Force and RUSA leadership about the future directions of professional and personal development opportunities, both free and paid, outside of ALA conferences.

The form takes 4-7 minutes to complete and will be open through March 1st.

On behalf of the conference organizing committee, I am pleased to present the preliminary program for CAPAL15: Academic Librarianship and Critical Practice, the second annual conference of the Canadian Association of Professional Academic Librarians (CAPAL). The program features sessions on a wide range of topics, from open access to critical pedagogy and information literacy to digitization to philosophy to academic freedom to corporatization and neoliberalism, and much more.
