Event GLBT-RT: Transgender In-Service Workshop - Open Only to RT Members

All GLBT-RT members are encouraged to take advantage of this educational opportunity about transgender issues within the LGBT communities, and learn ways that each of us can be better allies within the Round Table and in our communities at work and at home.

All GLBT-RT members are encouraged to take advantage of this educational opportunity about transgender issues within the LGBT communities, and learn ways that each of us can be better allies within the Round Table and in our communities at work and at home.

The transgender in-service workshop will be led by Andre Wilson of Ann Arbor, MI.  Wilson, a LGBT activist for over 30 years, consults nationally on transgender health access, health coverage, & employee benefits. He was is the first openly transgender person to head a contract negotiating team for a local union—the American Federation of Teachers Local 3550, better known as the Graduate Employees' Organization (GEO) at the University of Michigan. Under Wilson’s leadership, GEO won health care coverage for transgender transitions.

What Makes Tango so Scary?

A panel will discuss the background and history of challenged children's books featuring GLBT characters and themes; the value and importance of including and making use of these books in the library collection; facing challenges to these materials; and self-censorship among librarians in building such collections.

Peter Parnell, is a playwright and television writer who successfully turned his hand to children’s literature with "And Tango Makes Three."

Justin Richardson, M.D., is an assistant professor of psychiatry at Columbia and Cornell universities.

This event is being co-sponsered by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC of ALA), Intellectual Freedom Round Table (IFRT of ALA) and the Social Responsibalities Round Table (SRRT of ALA).

Carolyn Caywood, Librarian, Bayside Special Services Library, Virginia Beach, Va will discuss the history of censorship of LGBT themed children's materials.

Jamie LaRue, Director of Douglas County Libraries, Co will speak about effectively defending challenges to library materials.

Victor Schill, Branch Librarian, Fairbanks Branch Library, Houston, Tx will speak about the importance and use of such materials in the library collection.

Nancy Silverrod,  Librarian, San Francisco Public Library, will discuss internal censorship on the part of librarians concerned with avoiding book challenges and controversy.

Author/historian, Dr. John D'Emilio, Professor of Gender & Women's Studies, University of Illinois at Chicago, whose books have twice won the Stonewall Book Award, will discuss this seminal event in GLBT history and the impact it has had since then. This program is co-sponsored by the Committee on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender History, an affiliate of the American Historical Association.

Forty Years Since Stonewall
