Pre-vote discussion: Proposed name change of the Value of Academic Libraries Committee

The Board is invited to review the Board action regarding the proposed name change of the Value of Academic Libraries Committee, and have discussion during the period of 10/30/17 to 11/5/17.

Please review the attached Board action form regarding the proposed name change of the Value of Academic Libraries Committee and provide feedback using threaded discussions in this ALA Connect post.

Following the discussion period, the Board will vote on the appointment via virtual vote during 11/6/17 to 11/12/17, and confirm its vote at the 2018 Midwinter Meeting.

Understanding that VAL has considered this thoughtfully and had discussion(s) with the Board, I just wonder if consulting a bit more broadly would not be in order, since the premise is that this would have a positive effect (switching from value to impact).  Perhaps even a random sample of leaders from COP  would provide the reassurance that their intended outcome is what others not as deeply immersed would also perceive.

I'm leaning in agreement with Irene on this idea of gathering some more input might be beneficial. Unintended outcomes can have a significant effect.

This is an interesting thought, Irene, and I'm eager to hear others' reactions to consulting more broadly.

As VAL's board liaison, I want to note that VAL members have spent a decent amount of time discussing a possible name change, both in a virtual meeting and in email following their meeting.  There are a number of members who have expressed concerns with the group spending a lot time and energy on a name change, when they really want to be able to build on the good work of the committee.  So, if the Board feels it necessary or useful to poll others about a name change, I'd recommend that we support VAL in doing this (i.e., take the lead on consulting with COP leaders or others), and give VAL members time to work on travel scholarships, research grants, and other key projects they've identified for the fall.  Of course, VAL members might opt to consult with others themselves, but I think we should at least offer to help them if we ask them to seek input from a broader group.

Again, I think your idea is an interesting one, Irene - thanks for suggesting it!

I want to second this approach. I think it's important to get feedback, as this change might be one that is significant to some members, but I'd hate to put it as a burden on the committee. If we can help support gathering this feedback it will save the committee time and also signal to members we're being member-centered.

I agree that taking the pulse outside the committee and the Board would be a good step.  A quick poll of the COP leadership would be helpful and it wouldn't slow down the process of renaming too much.  Members recognize VAL, so we want to make sure we don't lose that recognition in a name change.

If we suggest the committee get feedback from the COP leadership, can we conduct another Board virtual vote prior to Midwinter?

Just adding my agreement that, it can't hurt to get some additional input on this idea/name change to a) at least, make the membership aware that the discussion is taking place, and b) get feedback from stakeholders.  I think the ideas behind the name change are on point in the sense that refreshing the brand with a more forward looking statement could have a positive "impact".  That said, I might also add that there may be a more of a middle path, by which the committee is renamed, but we continue to use VAL moniker with reference to the initiative/work for some purposes.

I agree with the direction that this conversation is taking regarding a quick survey of the COP community.  Speaking for my own opinion, I am torn about a new name for this committee since VAL is such a recognizable brand for this goal area and the work the committee is engaged in. However, I am flexible and can support a board decision.

I appreciate the Board's sensitivity to gathering member input in so many circumstances, but I just don't personally see the need here. Their reasoning makes sense to me. If the committee overall feels a name change makes sense, I support it.

Dear Board members,

Looking over your comments, many of you wish for more input from the membership before acting on this request. Here is one possible path forward. You do not have to take action upon this request. We can let the committee know that you would like more information about how a change would resonate in the field.

One possible way to gather more input without burdening the committee would be to put this out as a topic for discussion at the Midwinter Leadership Council. We could also develop a short feedback form that could be send to those leaders not attending MW. I am open to other paths forward but wanted to suggest one possibility.

Building on Mary Ellen’s suggestion, how about developing the short feedback form and sending it to the ACRLleads list for a week or so?  That way the VAL committee wouldn’t have to wait until After Midwinter in February.

On No

I like that this takes into account the interest in feedback but doesn't delay the decision too much. If we don't feel February is too far away, Midwinter also works.

I support Mary Ellen's summary, and Jeanne's suggestion.

I thought I'd circle back to this to see if we could close the loop. From the discussion, it doesn't seem that the board has a strong sense of urgency. We also have several members suggesting more member feedback.

Perhaps the best next step should be to tell the committee that if they feel this is an urgent request, we would like to have more member feedback. Otherwise, we can circle back to it in a future year.

Any thoughts from the board?

Seems like a reasonable approach to me.

I think that this course of action to wait and ask for more input is a good strategy.  Eventually, we will need to address this question and make a decision but at this point in time it is not urgern.

Emily Daly's picture

Thanks for circling back to this, Lauren!  I wondered where things stood at this point.  I realize this isn't a point of urgency for the board, but the VAL committee has spent time discussing a name change, and I think they would like to bring closure so they don't spend valuable time re-hashing the same conversation months or years from now.  I myself am ready to vote on the name change but realize that not everyone is at that point.  If we do feel more member input is necessary, I think it would be best to help VAL gather that input sooner rather than later.  Is there someone who would like to help VAL do that?  If we don't feel it is a priority to seek member input at this point, are we ready to go ahead and vote on the name change?  I think either approach is fine.  I feel confident in saying that the current VAL committee and leadership will appreciate bringing some closure to this issue.

Hi again, fellow Board members,

I'd like to inform the Board of the latest from the VAL Committee regarding a possible name change.

Mary Ellen discussed the proposed name change with VAL Committee Chair Alan Carbery this afternoon, and they feel it is best to let go the possibility of changing the name of the VAL committee.  The committee is as divided about the name change as the Board seems to be, and neither Mary Ellen nor Alan want the committee to spend a lot of time rebranding or gathering info about their current brand (I believe some of us feel that way, too).

Per Mary Ellen's suggestion, I'd like to make a motion to “Postpone indefinitely” this vote to change the name of the VAL Committee.  We'll need to have someone second this motion, and then we'll vote on it here in Connect.  If the motion passes by majority, we will not have to vote on this board action.

I welcome your questions and thoughts about closing the loop on this board action.

Hope you're all doing well and that you enjoy your weekend!

I second the motion to postpone indefinitely the vote on the name change.

I support this solution and want to thank everyone who was involved in the thoughtful conversation and closing the loop on this conversation for now.  Allison will be putting this on connect for a virtual vote next week.  Again, thank you all for the creative, thoughtful treatment of this request.

Sincerely,

Cheryl
