Online Doc 2010 Annual Meeting EBSS Research Committee (Draft)

ALA /EBSS Committee Meeting Minutes

Date: June 26, 2010

Committee Name: Research Committee

Name of person submitting Minutes:   Helga Visscher

Members Present:  Helga Visscher, Chair, Penny Beile, Yu-Hui Chen, Scott Lancaster, Bernadette Lear, Jason Martin, and Cristina Dominguez Ramirez.

Members Excused:  Adis Beesting, excused; Karen Hartman, excused; Anne Buchanan, online member.

Guests: none.

Minutes:

Helga Visscher called the meeting to order at 9:30 am.

Minutes of the January 16, 2010 Midwinter Meeting were approved as presented.

We discussed the possibilities for future poster sessions or activities of the EBSS Committee.  One possibility would be to have an EBSS Virtual Poster session on a WIKI, or other electronic format.  Others commented that a live poster session is more highly regarded, and having a definite date would have a specific end product.  It was agreed that having a larger or stronger electronic component to the poster sessions would be good. We can combine the best of the online/virtual presentation, and the best of a live poster session. That may include having each selected proposal up on a website, such as ALA Connect, or a yet-to-be–determined wiki.  We summarized some of the best practices to continue the success of the Research Forum as a presentation:

  • ·         We have clear procedures for submission, deadlines and evaluation in place.
  • ·         The Research Forum is a great opportunity for the presenters, and to foster good publicity for EBSS (and APA).
  • ·         Evaluation of each proposal should have more online interaction, both before the selection, and to foster improvement after selection.
  • ·         We could invite editors of CRL and CRL News, as well as related publication to the poster session, to foster the publication opportunities.
  • ·         We should send the notice of the session to other list-servs.  This is being done.
  • ·         When writing the congratulatory e-mail to the selected poster presenters, to cc the message to that person’s supervisor or Dean of Libraries.  This would discourage no-shows.

We should consider having a Virtual meeting for the January 2011 meeting in San Diego.  Cristina Ramirez, the incoming chair will plan the logistics.  There may be a conference phone call, or a webinar, all to-be arranged.

Agenda Item Minutes:  Logistics for the Research Forum this afternoon:

Meeting adjourned

Time adjourned. 11:10 am

Summary:  The Research Committee discussed that in addition to the poster session part of their activities, to include more online interaction.  This could include a wiki, or a website that includes the proposals for presentation, so that presenters would get more ongoing feedback from the committee.

Action Items

  • More publicity to more list-servs for the EBSS Research Forums.  Committee Chair and members have to recruit colleagues in other list servs.
  • Invite editors of CRL and C&RL News to the Research Forum, to encourage publication opportunities.  Cristina Ramirez Research committee chair, should make the contacts.
  • Consider having the Midwinter Meeting in January 2011 as a virtual meeting.  Incoming chair, Cristina Ramirez will poll the membership, and arrange for  a conference call, or a webinar, or online chat, and determine the best venue.
